Hawkins Folsom & Muir (HFM) proudly engages in sophisticated legal work at the cutting edge of the profession—yet our roots stretch back more than a century. The firm’s origin traces to 1904, when Azro E. Cheney began practicing law. In 1910, he was joined by Prince A. Hawkins, Sr., who, along with his partners, relocated from Boulder, Colorado, to Reno, Nevada.
With Colorado’s mining prospects waning, the firm sent a partner west in search of a new location. He chose Reno—a city that reminded him of Boulder—for its promise and vitality. Though there were no paved roads or automobiles at the time, Reno stood as the only city between Sacramento and Salt Lake City, thriving as a mercantile hub serving Nevada’s ranches, mines, and growing industries.
The firm has grown and evolved significantly since those early days. Prince A. Hawkins, Jr. joined in 1943, followed decades later by George K. Folsom and Gordon R. Muir in 1988. While our early practice focused on water and mining law, HFM has since become a leader in trusts and estates, estate and fiduciary litigation, business succession, taxation, and financial matters.
Our attorneys are active members of both local and national organizations dedicated to estate law and related specialties. At HFM, we believe that with experience comes vision.
Established in Northern Nevada in 1910, HFM proudly celebrates more than a century of independent legal practice—and continues to play a meaningful role in shaping the legal landscape of our region.
